Virtual river gauges enhance extreme weather risk management

ONEOK uses advanced modeling and virtual river gauges to monitor pipeline risks in real time, helping anticipate and respond to extreme weather impacts across diverse terrains.


With more than 100,000 locations interacting with waterways and varied terrain, ONEOK manages pipeline integrity in environments shaped by changing weather patterns and ground conditions. Extreme weather events can introduce new risks, from shifting soils to increased water flow at pipeline crossings, requiring a proactive and data-driven approach.


As part of its 72-hour extreme weather response program, ONEOK has implemented over 48,000 virtual river gauges at pipeline-waterway intersections. Developed in partnership with an artificial intelligence technology provider, these gauges use physics-based machine learning models that account for gravity, river force and pipeline characteristics. This enables continuous monitoring of conditions where physical sensors may not be practical.


The resulting insights support early identification of potential threats and allow teams to prioritize field assessments and mitigation efforts. By combining predictive analytics with targeted field response, ONEOK enhances its ability to maintain safe, reliable operations during periods of heightened weather risk.
